The next level: when the digital marketing professional becomes a strategic decision-maker

The role of digital marketing is fundamentally changing: alongside operational knowledge, business, strategic, and AI competencies are also needed. We discussed this with Marianna Csarnai, an associate professor at METU.

Marianna, a MediaSales ügyvezetőjeként és a METU Executive MBA Digitális Marketing szakirányának szakvezetőjeként nap mint nap találkozol cégvezetőkkel, marketingvezetőkkel és a szakma legjobb szakembereivel. Mit látsz, hol akadnak el leggyakrabban a kollégák a karrierjükben?

Csarnai Marianna: I see that many people handle various platforms (Meta, Google, TikTok) excellently, continuously educating themselves, but when it comes to discussing finances, cash flow, ROI, and business strategy in a leadership meeting, they fall silent. Unfortunately, most domestic marketing professionals micromanage for the majority of their working hours, and this is why they get stuck: they cannot think in a systems perspective.

Csarnai Marianna: The biggest problem is that they do not speak a common language. The marketer thinks in terms of marketing campaigns, while the business leader thinks in terms of business results. For marketing to become the engine of growth, the marketer must understand the entire infrastructure of corporate operations – law, finance, HR, pricing. Additionally, they must learn to respond sensitively to the new technological solutions that emerge weekly in our profession, which means continuous learning.

Milyen válaszokat adtok ezekre a kihívásokra a METU-n?

Csarnai Marianna: The METU Executive MBA Digitális Marketing képzésének curriculum was compiled not by professors sitting in ivory towers, but by practicing marketing professionals. We do not pretend that we alone know the great truths of life: every year we fine-tune and professionally review the educational materials. What is set in stone for us, however, is that instead of tools, we provide a systems perspective and a „big picture.” The goal is not to teach more buttons to press, but to understand the interconnections of the digital ecosystem. As one of our students put it, Sinkovits Ingrid „Good marketing is a reflection of a business's operations.”

Mi ezért közelítünk holisztikusan a marketinghez: a hallgatók ne elszigetelt tantárgyakat lássanak, hanem azok egymásra épülését, hogy a képzés végére a vezetői szemlélet is valóban „megérkezzen”.

Csarnai Marianna: The answer is simple: we invite professionals to teach who work in their field from Monday to Friday and bring their latest experiences into the classes. Among our instructors are executives, startup founders, strategists, and leading experts, including Szilárd Béres, Marianna Bojér, Dávid Falus, Bettina Füleki, Tamás Gerzsényi, Gergely Gulya, Dr. Attila Horváth, Dr. Mónika Imreh-Tóth, Attila Kemecsei, Melinda Klausz, Dr. Tamás Klein PhD, Richárd Lévai, Róbert Markó, Lia Menyhárt, Tamás Nagy, Kamilla Strausz, Edit Ditte Szabó, Tamás Szeles, Róbert Vági, and István Varga. I participate in both worlds – combining agency and university roles – not only in organizing the profession but also in teaching.

Oktatóink olyan szenior szakemberek, akik aktívan kutatják a legújabb megoldásokat, konferenciákon adnak elő, a képzési tematikánk pedig agilis módszertannal folyamatosan frissül. Sok oktatóval a képzés legeleje óta együtt dolgozunk.

We also do not forget that the name of a István Sas advertising psychologist is closely related to the history of the profession. Until his death in 2018, he taught the Advertising and Creativity subject, which was based on the aforementioned perspective: that marketing should always be examined in its contexts and broader framework. This way of thinking still defines the training today. Thanks to this continuity, the teaching staff has expanded over the years with professionals – including you – who have already completed this training. For students, the Marketing Secrets blog, inspired by his personality, provides a real publication platform that also serves this perspective and knowledge transfer.

Csarnai Marianna: They arrive with extremely differentiated knowledge to the training the students: there are those who come with a deep operational marketing background, and there are those who arrive as company leaders or from the economic field. In the first semester, we therefore place a special emphasis on approaching and systematizing knowledge levels – we call this dual-track student development.

Csarnai Marianna
Csarnai Marianna,

A hazai médiapiac jelentős átalakuláson megy keresztül.

Csarnai Marianna: We are facing an extremely exciting period: major player and ownership changes are currently taking place in the domestic media market. Together with Gergely Gulya, the media and marketing director of MediaSales, we made a joint decision to bring the latest market reality into the classes. We analyze in detail with the students the digital product offerings of domestic commercial sales houses and independent media companies, the package structures, as well as the dynamics of the advertising pie – with particular attention to how spending is divided between global platforms (Meta, Google, TikTok) and domestic publishers.

Csarnai Marianna: Both recent graduates and career changers struggle with the same issue: how to quickly and credibly become recognized professionals in a constantly changing market. This training provides exactly that bridge – through real campaigns, the business maturity that allows them to connect marketing to corporate revenues. And since the weekend structure means they do not have to jeopardize their current livelihood in the meantime, the new career can be built on solid foundations, gradually. In the case of career changers, the most exciting aspect is how previous experiences gain new meaning: a computer scientist can become a marketing technology specialist, a salesperson can become an account manager, and a finance professional can become a data-driven analyst with us.
